What is Menopause?

 What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of aging that all women experience. It's the time when a woman's menstrual periods permanently stop, marking the end of her reproductive years. This typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although the exact timing can vary.

Menopause is caused by a decline in the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries. These hormones are responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle and other bodily functions. As estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) stops, and periods cease.

The transition to menopause, known as perimenopause, can begin several years before your last period. During this time, you may experience a variety of symptoms, such as:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Irregular periods
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sex drive

Menopause is not a disease, but it can be a challenging time for some women. The symptoms can be disruptive and uncomfortable, and some women may also experience emotional distress. However, there are treatments available to help manage the symptoms of menopause and improve your quality of life.
